MacroView DMS and DMS Pro have always supported dragging and dropping large volumes of files and emails to SharePoint by creating the destination folders in SharePoint and then dragging files into them.
This can be very useful when all the files are stored in just a few folders, but when the files are spread across a large folder structure it can be a time consuming exercise. In MacroView DMS 8.7.141 and later this is no longer an issue because you can drag and drop one or more folders from your local computer or file share and MacroView DMS will replicate the folder and sub folder structure and upload each of the files stored in those folders.
Folders can be dragged and dropped from Windows Explorer to:
- the File List or Tree View in Outlook
- the File List or Tree View in DMS Explorer.
Note: Folders are only created for each location that contains one or more files or a sub folder that contains one or more files. So an empty folder structure that does not contains any files somewhere within its folders will not be created.
How are folder and filename clashes handled
If a folder with the same name as the folder being dragged and dropped already exists in the destination location, a message will be displayed and the save will be cancelled.
Before creating any folders, MacroView DMS will check for any characters that are not supported by SharePoint and will automatically remove them. If the renaming of any folders results in a clash with another folder in the same location a warning message will be display to inform the user that the duplicate folders will not be created.
If the user clicks Yes the remaining folders and files will be uploaded and the folders that clashed will need to be renamed before they can be dragged to that location in SharePoint.
Before uploading any files MacroView DMS will check for any characters that are not supported by SharePoint and if Remove invalid character when uploading is enabled in DMS Options > General, will automatically remove them. If the renaming of any files results in a clash with another file in the same location a warning message will be display to inform the user that the duplicate files will not be uploaded.
If the user clicks Yes the remaining files will be uploaded and the files that clashed will need to be renamed before they can be dragged to that location in SharePoint.
Enabling bulk drag and drop of folders
By default folder drag and drop is disabled. To enable it, check the Enable folder drag and drop setting under DMS Options > General > Bulk Operations
When drag and dropping one or more folders the Maximum File Count and Block upload if maximum file count is exceeded settings are respected. If the maximum file count across all the selected folders and sub folders exceeds the set Maximum File Count value, one of the following messages will be displayed.
So if you are enabling the drag an drop of folders you will most likely want to uncheck the option Block upload if maximum file count is exceeded.
