Issue
MacroView DMS and DMS Pro customisations, such as the ‘SharePoint’ button or ‘Save to SharePoint’ menu items, are not present when the user starts Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint
Background
There are a number of causes for MacroView customisations disappearing from Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint:
- User shuts down the PC while the application is still running.
- User starts Outlook then immediately closes it before the DMF Pane has fully loaded.
- Clash with another Outlook Add-in (e.g. certain virus checker, PDF creation add-ons and mail archive software).
- Unexpected shut-down of the application.
- One or more required software components (e.g. Visual Studio Tools for Office) are no longer installed or are not working correctly. See the MacroView DMS or DMS Pro Installation and Configuration guide for more information.
In the above cases the MacroView DMS Add-in may become disabled, or have its Load Behavior set to ‘2’ (Do Not Load) instead of the install default value ‘3’ (Load as the application Starts). In either case the MacroView DMS or DMS Pro customisations will not display when the application next starts.
As Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint start after an unexpected shutdown, they may prompt the user as to whether the DMS Add-in should be disabled – the default response (selected by hitting Enter) is to Disable the MacroView DMS Add-in.
Resolution
MacroView DMS add-in has been disabled
To check the status of the MacroView DMS add-in, from the menu bar select 'File' > 'Options' > 'Add-Ins'. If the MacroView DMS Add-In is disabled, enable it.
Alternatively you can re-enable it by deleting the contents of the following Registry branch:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\[version]\[application]\Resiliency\DisabledItems]
Load behavior for MacroView DMS add-in
If the MacroView DMS customisation is still not visible please ensure that the load behaviour is set to '3' in the registry branch below:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\[application]\Addins\MacroView.DMF.application]
"LoadBehavior"=dword:00000003
Repair the MacroView DMS add-in from your Control Panel
If the above corrective actions do not cause the MacroView DMS customisations to re-appear when Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint next starts then you will need to run a repair of the MacroView DMS package.
-
Ensure that all Microsoft Office applications are closed during the repair process.
-
As a Local Administrator open Windows Control Panel
-
Depending on your version of Windows select ‘Add/Remove Programs’ or ‘Programs and Features’.
-
Select the MacroView client that you have installed
-
Click on the ‘Repair’ option.
Remove > Reboot > Reinstall
If all other measures have been unsuccessful MacroView Support recommends:
-
Remove the MacroView DMS add-in via Control Panel.
-
Restart the machine.
-
Reinstall the MacroView DMS add-in.
Addressing the underlying cause of the issue
The above steps can be used to restore the MacroView customisations so that they appear again as Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint starts, but in some situations the customisations may continue to become disabled and disappear unless an underlying issue is addressed. If only some users are experiencing the disable / disappearance symptoms it may be that they are running specific add-ins that are clashing with the MacroView Add-in. In that case disable all other add-ins, check that MacroView DMS / DMS Pro works in the ‘clean’ environment and then re-enable each other add-in in turn until the disable / disappear issue is detected. MacroView uses VSTO to add its customisations, as is now recommended by Microsoft. This is not the case with some other customisations.
Automatic recovery from disabled add-ins
If users continue to experience Disabled Add-ins (e.g. because they close Windows while the application is still running), consideration should be given to extending the Log On script so that the user’s Registry entries are automatically adjusted as shown above.
