Office is slow to shut down

Issue

Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and PowerPoint are slow to shut down after using MacroView software.

 

Background

Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) encounters a problem after displaying a WPF window in Office applications in devices that support touch/pen input devices.

This issue has been acknowledged by Microsoft and was resolved a number of years ago, however the problem has come up again in recent Windows/Office/.NET framework updates.

This problem will impact all custom VSTO add-ins that use WPF.

 

Solution

The current workaround is:

  • Open Control Panel and select Device Manager (note: if this option isn't available, change your view in the top-right to Small or Large icons)
  • Expand Human Interface Devices
  • Right-click HID-compliant touch screen and select Disable
